Re: Baja 1000 Race Thread

This race begins at 6:30 Friday morning and ends Saturday evening so you can pop in on the fun all day and night.

I will put all the links here.

WARNING: I will be posting an audio link for the race. This is LIVE and it's on a private bandwidth so it's like listening to the drivers in-car. However, what you will be listening to is Race Operations. You cannot hear any of the drivers unless and until they call into RO.
Drivers are on frequencies not available for public broadcast.

RO uses frequencies that are sometimes over-run by the locals. You will hear:

1. A lot of Spanish.
2. A lot of idiots who 'hijack' the frequency to disrupt the race.
3. A lot of swearing from The Weatherman when someone has a stuck mic (microphone left in the 'on' and 'transmitting' position which blocks others from using the frequency. This is called a 'hot mic' and is called that because the longer the mic is left on or open the hotter it becomes.

Who is The Weatherman? He is a grumpy old guy waaaay up on top of a mountain with primitive equipment trying to keep tabs on every one of the hundreds of yahoos in the race. His job is to relay messages to the proper recipient.

1. The radio is not to be used for competitor position updates (you'll hear him chew people out for this constantly)
2. You will hear him directing pit crews to whatever truck/vehicle has broken down.
3. You will hear him relay when a competitor has withdrawn from the race.
4. You will hear him call for Emergency vehicles and medical helicopters should someone be hurt.

____

SECOND WARNING:

This is one of the most brutal races in the world. Every year competitors and/or spectators are hurt or even killed during the race.
It can be quite graphic- AND I DO MEAN GRAPHIC!!

This race is held on public roads. Imagine 800hp monster trucks screaming through villages and towns, avoiding loose livestock and local traffic which may also be using the road.

This is a race of testosterone. The competitors and the crowds are all jacked up. Young Mexican men actually try to touch the trucks and cars as they go by- a sign of machismo. Others may build what are called booby-traps.

A booby trap is only limited by the imagination, determination and resources of the builders. Telephone poles, barbed wire, boulders, ditches, ramps- anything they can get their hands on to block the course or make the vehicles become airborne or crash. It's just part of the race.

_____

THIRD WARNING:

You may find a list of competitors on some of the sites listed. It includes the name of the driver, co-drivers (if they have them) and the truck number. Numbers indicate the division they are competing in.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE- DO NOT REFER TO ANY COMPETITOR INVOLVED IN AN INCIDENT BY NAME!!!

Most of the time the information is wrong and only leads to speculation and rumors. Please use numbers only out of respect.

It is so unbelievably chaotic on the course that misinformation is the norm.

Remember- this race starts in the morning and runs through the night and into the next day.
_____

A few last things....

This race is run in Mexico- NOT the United States.

There are some badass dudes down there in Encinada, including the Federales. Competitors can have their vehicles stolen or 'detained' until they pay a bribe, or may just have them taken period. Even while they're in or on them. It's pretty lawless down there and all this influx of wealth and technology can be hard to resist.

Also- Mexican airspace is CLOSED TO ALL NON-MILITARY AIR TRAFFIC AFTER DARK!!

This means emergency helicopters and life-flights. Any air traffic must be pre-approved before it can take off to assist in an emergency. Yeah, it * * * *s and people can die. Everyone knows the score and they all sign the waivers.

You really need Mozilla Firefox to hear this properly...IE will work but not as well.

You will also need to update your Java.

Click on stream...then hit Vizcaino....you will hear an intro commercial...then go up and click on the observatory bar...hear the commercial again...

You are getting this feed from a mountain top in baja, mexico...it takes a little patience and some fooling around. sometimes I click right out, go back to the race-dezert page and reload it.

It's worth the trouble.

You may lose the feed once in a while...just start the process over from the link.

When asked about this year’s event, Gordon commented, “This year’s course is very technical, very rough and very fast, which plays right into our team’s strengths. The team has done a good job building up the reliability in our Monster Energy / Toyo Tires / 4Wheel Parts trophy truck. We’ve been in Mexico pre-running the course over the past few weeks. Having covered the course twice, I feel very confident of our chances. With the assistance of both our Off-road and NASCAR team personnel, we have a really good support staff in place. Everyone is well informed on our race strategy and goals for this week. If all goes according to plan, we should bring home our fourth overall Baja 1000 victory.”

Tracking for RG from his home page.

TT (trophy trucks) go out on course at around 10:30-11am PST.

I should be on here around 1pm EST.

I'll answer any questions you have and will be here on and off for the full day and a half.

A couple of Monster Java's and several pots of coffee should do the trick LMAO.

Seriously, if you've never heard or seen this race I encourage you to give it a try- it's forkin cool as hell!!
